The Los Angeles–based Block Shop, founded by sisters Lily Stockman and Hopie Hill, is a
multi-generational design studio dedicated to handmade textiles. For LACMA’s exhibition Deep Cuts: Block Printing Across Cultures, Hill and designer Ainslee McAndrew created a pattern for wallpaper inspired by William Morris’s “Rose” textile, substituting California poppies for the English roses and swapping in undulating parallel lines for the entwined vines.

As part of this collaboration, Block Shop produced a robe, scarf, and bandana exclusively for the LACMA Store featuring their pattern from the exhibition. Printed and dyed by hand in small batches, these pieces celebrate the rich history, process, and materials of block printing.

To make Block Shop's printed fabric, each design is traced onto a wooden slab, which then is carved by hammer and chisel into a printing block. The block is then printed meticulously by hand using soft, AZO-free, non toxic pigment.

Variation in printing & color are hallmarks of hand block printing and dyeing in small batches.

    - 100% certified organic Indian cotton
    - Hand block printed by 5th generation master printers in Jaipur
    - Wash cold, tumble dry low. Iron as needed.
