Edgar Payne (1882-1947) was one California's early plein air artists, a movement inspired by Impressionism that found its own voice in the Golden State. Payne is known for his paintings of mountains and the ocean. 

These holiday cards are based on a detail of his painting, The Great White Peak (No. 2), 1924, of the Matterhorn. LACMA's collections include this work by Payne and other California Impressionist painters.
