This porcelain plate is based on Andy Warhol's Flowers on White, 1964-5, here in purple. The iconic image was originally created by Warhol by silkscreening a photograph on canvas, giving an automated feel with color variations.
Warhol's first solo exhibition on the West Coast, and the first exhibition of his Soup Can paintings was at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. LACMA's permanent collection includes over fifty works by Warhol including two of his tomato soup can paintings.
