Luchita Hurtado: Eve. 2020
$1,080.00
“Eve” is a limited edition print created for LACMA by artist Luchita Hurtado (Venezuela, 1920-2020) on the occasion of her career survey, Luchita Hurtado: I Live I Die I Will Be Reborn, which opened at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in February 2020. Based on a drawing by Hurtado from the 1970s, this signed archival inkjet print was made with Lapis Press and is published by LACMA as part of the museum’s ongoing series of artist editions.
Hurtado’s experiments with language, pattern, and abstraction are a central element of the work’s composition. Like a palindrome, the word “Eve” can be read forward or backward; in Hurtado’s print, it can be read up or down, across, or diagonally. The artist’s word choice was informed by her consistent engagement with human relationships and the life cycle (related works feature the words “Adam,” “Womb,” “You,” and “Me”). Finally, the apple at the center of the composition is especially suggestive; as Hurtado herself remarked of her use of the fruit in several works, “an apple means more than an apple.”
This limited edition print was published by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2020 with The Lapis Press as part of LACMA’s ongoing print program.
