Through artwork and interviews, Tavares Strachan sheds light on what has been rendered invisible within mainstream narratives.
Tavares Strachan: The Day Tomorrow Began is published in conjunction with the artist’s first museum exhibition in Los Angeles. This intimate, pocket-sized book is divided into three sections—Labor, Heroes, and Knowledge—and features images of works from the exhibition and the artist’s larger practice. Interviews with figures from the artist’s life—including his mother, Ella Strachan, and his friend and fellow Bahamanian Christina “Muffin” Fernander—illuminate the artist’s background and bring to life key themes in his work. Strachan is interested in what has been rendered invisible within mainstream narratives, particularly related to the Black diaspora. The book also includes line drawings and descriptions of diverse American monuments. Strachan was a recipient of the 2014 LACMA Art + Technology Lab Artist Grant and, in 2022, was named a MacArthur Foundation fellow.
Edited by Diana Nawi, with additional contributions by Dr. Asfa-Wossen Asserate, Paul Farber, Christina “Muffin” Fernander, Uncle Harry Gardiner, Paul Holdengräber, Sibahle Mtimkulu, Ella Strachan
