Robert Mapplethorpe is among the most significant artists of the late twentieth century. His unrelenting pursuit of formal perfection transformed the floral still life photograph from a rather sentimental, stilted genre into a crucial contemporary theme. Mapplethorpe's bold and meticulously lit compositions captured the delicate, ephemeral beauty of flowers and presented it in his finely crafted gelatin silver and color prints.
LACMA's permanent collection includes works by Robert Mapplethorpe.
