Barbara Kruger (United States, b. 1945) is one of the most significant and visible artists of our time. As an active consumer and vigilant viewer of popular culture, Kruger grapples with the accelerated ways pictures and words instantaneously flow through media and how they are simultaneously played and replayed.
The inspiration for this mug is Barbara Kruger's installation Untitled (Shafted), 2008, in the elevator shaft of LACMA's BCAM building. The mug has a detail containing the words SHOP and STARE.
LACMA's permanent collection includes works by Kruger. Unframed, LACMA's blog, has more information on Untitled (Shafted) including a flattened look at the graphics.
