This large journal is based on Fujita Tsuguharu's woodblock print Girl with Doll from the late 1930s. We don't know if this little girl was his daughter, or was asked to pose by her parents.
In 1913, Fujita Tsuguharu (Japan, 1886–1966, active France) moved from Tokyo to the Montparnasse district of Paris to establish his place in the European art world. He befriended many artists, including Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse—Fujita’s round eyeglasses and eccentric style make him instantly recognizable in 1920s photographs of the Montparnasse art scene. His paintings and watercolors of cats and women combined Japanese technique with Western subject matter and often sold better than works by his friends. The original work is in LACMA's permanent collection.
