All Impossible Deeds: A Report on the LACMA Art + Technology Lab, 2014–2025
$48.00
All Impossible Deeds chronicles a decade of open-ended experimentation at LACMA’s Art + Technology Lab, a pioneering initiative that offers new possibilities for artist-led innovation.
In 2013, LACMA’s Art + Technology Lab relaunched the museum’s pioneering 1967–71 program for a new era. All Impossible Deeds: A Report on the LACMA Art + Technology Lab, 2014–2025 documents the Lab’s work through descriptions of forty-five artist projects exploring technologies ranging from augmented reality and blockchain to space exploration and robotics. The publication captures both finished works and the creative process itself through diagrams, technical notes, and prototypes, with many artists reflecting on how the Lab has transformed their practices. Essays by Amy Heibel, Joel Ferree, and Claire L. Evans trace a decade when cultural attitudes toward emerging technologies shifted from optimistic possibility to urgent
critique.
The book also examines the original program’s enduring influence: William Hackman assesses the legacy of its publication, A Report on the Art and Technology Program of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1967–1971, while David Karwan analyzes the book as a landmark of early 1970s graphic design that became a prized object for designers and technologists. Reprints include texts from original curators Maurice Tuchman and Jane Livingston as well as descriptions of projects by Robert Irwin and James Turrell, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and more—demonstrating that the tensions between art and technology remain as vital, and unresolved, as ever.
