Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) was a key figure in the Impressionist movement that transformed French painting in the second half of the nineteenth century. Dedicated to painting en plein air, Monet created an extensive garden on his property at Giverny, including a water lily pond, which inspired a series of paintings in 1899; thereafter the subject dominated his art.
