Designed by Ed Ruscha and featuring photographs by Patrick Blackwell, The Night I Lost My Baby: A Las Vegas Vignette is a melodramatic story by Mason Williams in which the narrator is supposed to meet up with his baby in Vegas but she never appears. The plain, unaffected black and white pictures ground the frantic, kinetic narration in a world of bleak mundanity that's almost purposefully unaware of the narrator's plight. Williams, Blackwell, and Ruscha would team up again in 1967 on Royal Road Test, but where Royal Road Test is open and expansive in the tradition of the American road trip, The Night I Lost My Baby: A Las Vegas Vignette is a humorous but ultimately claustrophobic trip through a monochrome headspace in the face of the neon lights of Las Vegas.
