Plum trees are one of the first trees to blossom so it is a symbol of winter and a harbinger of spring in Japan. Yoshitoshi's beautiful woodblock print 'Wood for the Plum Tree' is featured on this holiday card and shows two Japanese women pinning ema, wooden wishing plaques, onto a plum tree's flowering branches.
