Nick Fouquet has created The Empress, a unique open crown Cuenca straw hat that was inspired by an 18th-century European painting in LACMA’s collection. A heart is embroidered into the crown, The Empress vintage tarot card, a match (a Fouquet detail), and a yellow macaw feather are tucked into the 1 1/2 in. hand dyed hatband.

Nick Fouquet started his hat-making business in 2011 with a storefront in Venice, California. All his hats are handmade and one of a kind, with a focus on natural aesthetics. This video shows how Nick makes his hats, and see a video about Nick's trip to Ecuador in search of straw hats.

The LACMA work that inspired this hat is attributed to the Bohemian School and depicts a fortune teller. The painting alludes to the five senses as seen by the berries, flowers, and musical instruments held by a child and by the hand that is being read by the fortune teller.
