This tee reproduces a poster designed for the exhibition New York School: The First Generation. It was created for one of the first exhibitions to be held at the newly opened Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1965. The exhibition featured the work of fifteen artists who, according to the catalogue “are commonly regarded as the creators in New York, of a new American painting often called ‘abstract expressionism.’” The poster and catalogue were designed by educator and influential graphic designer Louis Danziger.
Artists listed are William Bazioles, Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, Philip Guston, Hans Hoffman, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Richard Pousette-Dart, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, and Bradley Walker Tomlin.
LACMA’s permanent collection includes this work by Louis Danziger.
