These Kawase Hasui 'Tennoji, Osaka' holiday cards are based on a color woodblock print of the same name from 1927 by Japanese artist Kawase Hasui.
Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) was one of the major proponents of Shin-hanga movement in early to mid-twentieth century Japan. Though the techniques he used to create these prints were traditional, the compositions were modern and often influenced by Western art.
LACMA's permanent collection includes over 350 woodblock prints by Hasui.
