The Hannah Borger Overbeck Sunflowers tote is strong but very soft. The blooms here are probably an Eastern North American native sunflower known as Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), its tubers are a delicacy both in America and in Europe, and taste somewhat like artichoke.

Indiana’s Overbeck Pottery is renowned for ceramics that it produced from 1911 to 1951. Less well-known are the watercolors done by Hannah Borger Overbeck (United States, 1870–1931), one of four sisters who founded and ran the studio. Inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, she created works that blended scientific information while embodying an Arts & Crafts Movement aesthetic. LACMA’s permanent collection includes more than fifty works by Hannah and her sisters.
