Clare Vivier's blush pink 'L'HABIT NE FAIT PAS LE MOINE' tee was created for Wear LACMA. Her designs marry classic French glamour with minimalist L.A. cool in a line of handbags and clutches that are both utilitarian and stylish. With a nod to socially conscious construction, each bag bears the label “Locally Made." Vivier is firmly rooted in the local fashion community, and from conception to fabrication, her line has been made exclusively in Los Angeles since 2008
The designer was inspired by a vest from LACMA’s Costume and Textile collection, seen here, dating from the French Revolution. Vivier's pieces embrace the spirit of the 18th-century garment: from its beautiful colors to the intricate needlework and embedded French phrases. echoes the words stitched in petit point on the vest's right pocket. It means "the habit does not make the monk," but translates more closely to "don't judge a book by its cover." During the French Revolution, clothing served as a canvas for political debate.
