American Tree of Life Scarf

Member Price

This scarf celebrates an extraordinary American quilt (ca. 1875) which was originally made by Ernestine Eberhardt Zaumseil (American, born Germany, 1828- 1904). It bears the Tree of Life pattern, a popular bedcover design since the seventeenth century.

The first such bedcovers, called palampores, were from India and featured fantastic stylized trees. In Zaumseil's quilt, the foliage is more realistic than in the Indian versions. She seems to have traced actual leaves and vines for her appliquéd designs; the central "tree" is taken from grapevine leaves, and maple and beech leaves can also be clearly identified.

LACMA's permanent collection includes over three hundred American quilts.
