A tassel detail from a 16th century Muromachi helmet is seen on the cover of this beautiful journal. The tassel's shape is known as an agamaki, or dragonfly knot, the design of the cording represents the opened wings of a dragonfly. In Japan, the dragonfly is a symbol of strength.
This journal was produced in conjunction with the exhibition Samurai: Japanese Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection at LACMA.
