The Emptiness blank journal features a design by Kim Sun Wuk (sobriquet: Hanong). Kim immigrated to Los Angeles from South Korea and worked to sustain traditional calligraphy as an art form. In Emptiness, he produced a completely abstracted character that questioned and pushed the limits of traditional calligraphy. Kim was also an inspirational teacher who founded the Art of Ink in America Society to help fellow calligraphers expand the range and test the boundaries of contemporary calligraphy.
The original artwork by Kim (Korea, active United States, 1929–2012) is featured in Beyond Line: The Art of Korean Writing at LACMA from June 19 through September 29, 2019.
