Barbara Kruger (United States, b. 1945) is one of the most significant and visible artists of our time. As an active consumer and vigilant viewer of popular culture, Kruger grapples with the accelerated ways pictures and words instantaneously flow through media and how they are simultaneously played and replayed.
Barbara Kruger's powerful language and bold typography combined with appropriated imagery are seen on our Untitled (You Substantiate Our Horror) tee. Kruger adroitly takes images from mass media and fuses them with chilling captions that carry social and political messages.
LACMA’s permanent collection includes works by Kruger: Untitled (You Substantiate the Horror), 1985 which inspired this t-shirt and her large-scale installation, Untitled (Shafted), a digital print wall installation inside a three-story elevator shaft. Untitled (Shafted) may be seen in our BCAM building,
