The FREEDOM Quilt mug features a detail of a pattern taken from a quilt created by Jesse Telfair circa 1975. The making of the quilt was incited by an incident she suffered in the 1960s, when registering to vote was enough to cost this African American woman her job in a school kitchen. The bitterness of that experience still burned years later, and fellow quiltmakers urged her to express the pain through her art.

LACMA's permanent collection includes many American quilts, and textiles by Jesse Telfair (United States, 1913–1986) are included in the exhibition Outliers and American Vanguard Art at LACMA from November 18, 2018 through March 17, 2019.
