This limited edition multiple was made by Chris Burden and produced by LACMA. The cars that are included in the multiple were originally made for Chris Burden’s large scale sculpture Metropolis II now on view at LACMA on the first floor of BCAM. Each car and has rubber bumpers on the front and rear ends, the artist’s name and title of the work molded into the sidewalls of all four wheels and the bottom of the car, and a magnet embedded in the chassis to draw the car up the conveyer belts. The stand is composed of plywood, aluminum, and Plexiglas, the same materials used in the sculpture Metropolis II. Each car stand is signed and numbered on the bottom by Chris Burden.

Chris Burden first gained international prominence following his notorious and controversial performances, including Shoot (1971), Doorway to Heaven (1973), and Back to You (1974). Beginning in the late 1970s Burden began creating sculpture and installations. Since then the artist has produced a multitude of assemblages, installations, and kinetic sculptures, among other works.

Burden has performed and exhibited his work internationally, at institutions including Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Tate Museum, London; the 48th Venice Biennale, Venice and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

LACMA owns fifteen artworks by Burden including Urban Light which became an instant icon. Chris Burden lives in Los Angeles.
